if theres no double team, take it up strong, or go with a fingeroll if ur ahead of them and only if the help isnt close enough to block it.

if there's help coming from the post, and he's playing close enough to u to block it (or hes just huge) but hes also shutting down the passing lane to his man, then do a high-arcing "side layup." IT's like a floater, but its also a layup because of ur forward twisting motion and the fact that ur probably putting it off the backboard. if its not a good situation to do a floater/layup, and u cant pass, use the good old pump fake, or even an up and under. most underused drive move ever.

if u have size advantage, sick hops, or the guy just isnt in a good position to block u (e.g. from the side/back), go up strong with both hands firmly around the ball. ideally, u wanna go up for the shot/layup right away, but if u get hit or meet a lot of defensive pressure, double clutch just a little bit and put ur body into it...if u feel like u gonna get STUFFED, then maybe switch directions (e.g. right to left) and that could be enough to draw the foul.

the key is to practice all of this. practice driving full speed to the basket and finish with a fingeroll, reverse (when driving from the baseline), and the "floaty side layup" whatever its called vs. big guys. o ya, and taking it up strong to get teh foul and maybe the and1. and a nice pull-up jumper always helps.

and play lots of nba video games, i recommend nba 2K6. im not kidding, it helps ur drive game cuz u learn when to pass and when to change ur layup (shot stick )...damn this took a while to write
DAMN! nicely written! best reply yet and it was really helpful too! good work.

i find if i can get him tryin to steal the ball it's extremly easy to control your defender but you have to have really good handles and i also find if you can get your shoulder past his shoulder then you have him and can do many things from there

ok so before driving and you standing still, if ur open and near the key try and shoot the ball. If someone is guarding you then try and pass it to someone who is open. If no one is open, driving should be your last resort unless your really good at it. Before your dribble try and juke out the opponent by moving the ball around and putting it through your legs(not bouncing) and then after you could drive towards the basket.

When you are driving you must have the open lane or atleast a gap to get through. Whenever i take it to the hoop i predect what's going to happen and i try to prevent getting blocked and i try to draw the foul. My favourite technique of driving it hop stepping threw the guards in the 2-3 Zone defence and either tear droppin it straight in the centers face like A.I loves to do or do an up and under(windmill) and draw the foul for the 3 point play.

Whenever I get double-teamed, I will fake them and put the ball in between them (classic Wade and Kobe style) and just run to get the ball. Even if you cannot drive really well with your weak hand, at least drive one step before changing directions. This can drive the D off because they cannot figure out whether you are driving left or right. I think the basic crossover move is the most useful in basketball, since you can fake with it and cross over the Ds most easily.
When I drive into the paint I will do a fadeaway, because you can score easily and attract fouls at the same time.
In order to throw off good Ds, you must keep changing directions, drive this way, stop, crossover etc. For this you need a really good handle, because it isn't easy changing directions quickly, especially when you are driving.
That's about it. If you can put the ball through your opponent's legs. Just don't overdo it.
