Default coaching

I am a varisty boys coach, and i have coached girls varsity and boys junior high basketball before moving up to my present position...i have experienced a fair amount of success.....my record for three years as junior high coach was 28-14 (not bad considering the team hadn't won a game in two years when i came in....my two years as varsity girls was 30-20 (another accomplishment considering i made playoffs both years and the girsl program had only made it there twice before in the entire existence of the school, we also broke another team's 33 game league win streak)....now that im on boys it is more big time and more pressure but i love it....we are 3-1 so far this season and we start four juniors and have two others in our rotation

i just wanted to knwo if there are any other coaches on this site

Ya, some advice on how to make a high school team and what a coach is looking for during tryouts could really help a lot of the people on SBT.

well guys i will tell you what i look for, but i can't speak for other coaches....im only 24 so my coaching style is a lil different than most other coaches but i am more than glad to tell you what my biggest points are

first i should say that my teams play a very up tempo style, we press for 32 minutes full court, secondary break offense into several versions of flex, motion, and 1-4 offenses

they first thing i look for is heart....a guy who can't push through the pain of running, and twisting ankles, and taking bumps and charges has no place on my team

always run hard in every drill, never quit, and never give up....i always notice the kids that run their asses of the kids that dive all over the floor even when they have no chance of saving the ball....players like that are glue guys, they hold evrything together by covering up mistakes

make sure you always pay attention, there is nothing that burns my ass more than explaining a drill and then the first group or person screws it up...come with a clear mind so you are prepared to absorb every ounce of info the coach offers forth

make all your easy plays, missed layups and bad passes are unacceptable at the varsity level

one thing i think kids sometimes overdo is playing like a team....yes you have to share the ball and not shoot or dribble everytime you touch the rock, but i see a lot of kids do this to a fault....its a tryout you must get your own shine some if you wanna stand out to the coach...don't force but be aggressive we need to see what you can do

also really try to show off what your good at....most players know their biggest strength so use it to your advantage
if you can rebound good, make it your goals to get every rebound and box out...try to take the biggest player in every scrimmage and drill and shut him down on the boards, just simply outwork him
if you can defend always guard the best offensive player to show the coach what you are capable of
if you can penetrate and dish show it to me

if i think of any more stuff (im sure i will) ill post it guys

hope this helps ya

i can tell you thats a no most coaches cannot beat there own players they just use their experience and knowledge to help you. think about it if your coach is 70 years old do you think they will beat there players.
