Default Mig's VJB Novice Journal

Hey guys,

I was doing the air alert but it started killing my legs with shin spints so now I'm just doing stuff I read off the internet. It's just weights and plyos pretty much.

My current standing vertical is 20'.
My current running vertical is 24'.
Height: 5'9" (1.76m)
Weight: 165lbs (75kgs)
Reach: 88'
Goal vertical leap: 40'
(got this number by doing (height of rim) + (diameter of basketball) - (current standing reach)) or 120' + 8' - 88' = 40'

I'm getting my body fat percentage tested today. For those of you that didn't read my entry in the new members section, I'm pretty much a fat white boy that is only 5'9" and really needs to work on my hops. If i can do it, then anyone can.

I'm loading up on creatine this week and hitting the gym later today. I also have a game on tonight. Most of our matches are recorded by the coaching staff so if I ever dunk it in a game, it will be on tape!! He(k yeah! For now it is just crappy layups from a 20' vertical and you guys don't want to see that sh!t.

Current squat is 60kgs (132lbs). I know it's not a heavy weight, but the technique is really good. I'm not trying to lift heavy and impress ppl in the gym, I just want to get my vertical up. I've got to start loading the bar this week and lift more though.

Check you guys soon,

Mig

PS. Has anyone that has done TVP had to eat a strange diet? I would get that program, but I'm worried you just eat fruit and look like a skinny b!tch afterwards. I wanna have a good vertical, but don't want to look like a skinny poof just so I'm light enough to jump high. What do you guys reckon about its diet?

Hi All,

Good news! I got some gains over the last week. They are summarised below with my exercise description following after. (I also gained some sore legs but I think it's part of the process this early on )

Standing vert: Week 0 = 20', Week 1 (this week) = 24'!!
Running vert: Week 0 = 24', Week 1 (this week) = 25'

So really it's just an extra inch when running, but having the extra four inches of standing vertical is awesome. I noticed a little extra speed around the court because of just having stronger legs, and for some reason my shooting improved although that could have just been a lucky night (Yeah baby, 12 points in 3 minutes of court time at one stage!)

In terms of training, I only did strength work so far which might explain why my running vertical didn't go up the much (i.e. I probably need to start plyometric work as well). So only my strength has increased over the last week. These strength gains could just be related to loading on creatine.

I've also started officially on VJB novice weights and plyos. Yes it's official... I called ESPN to tell them about my new change in training, but they didn't seem to announce it on TV yet LOL

Anyway, I appreciate this forum guys. Keep posting up your results because when I read them it motivates my to try and get better each week as well. I've now got to gain 15' more inches before I can dunk, so there will be plenty more posts from me.

Peace out,

Mig

Hi there,

I'm hoping to gain 15 more inches from VJB which would get me up to a 40' vert. I think I've been lucky at the start of this program and things might get slower over the coming weeks but lets hope not! You know, when I did Air Alert version 5, my vertical actually got worse during the first week!!

In regards to the video of my 12 points in 3 minutes, we didn't record that match unfortunately because I was just filling in for a friend's team I made sure we recorded my next match though! But I only scored 5 points in 30 minutes which was a bit of a b!tch. We won the game but it was just a very slow defensive match. Happy to post up those baskets, although it would be boring LOL. But on a serious note, I might have to post up video of my vertical leap gains soon if they keep increasing like this.

Hi Novacaine,

I reckon creatine is responsible for a huge part of that. A study by SC University in Australia showed that creatine gave sprinters an 8% increase in strength after the loading phase of dosage. The rear kinetic chain muscles used by sprinters are very similar to that used in a vertical leap test so the benefits from creatine in that experiment translate over to some extent. I also think there are a few more things that need to be considered with those gains:

1. I had just starting to do squats with the proper technique for the week prior to that test. I "thought" I had been doing them properly for 6 months prior to that, until one day a friend said my squats look like shit. He corrected my technique and I had to drop down the weight so I could actually do them properly, but it ended up making my legs feel so much stronger after recovery.

2. Note that my overall vertical leaping ability only went up one inch!! So even though I got some good gains for a standing vertical, it still didn't help me at all to dunk the ball. I've got to do more plyometric work to translate that strength in to overall vertical gains.

3. I reckon my jumping technique could have just improved a little. Even though it was only a standing jump, I probably squatted down a little lower or something before launch and therefore got some sneaky improvements. The wall marks I made when doing the jump test show and honest 4 inch gain and were measured properly though.

To answer your question about creatine making me bigger or not, I would have to say it did. I gained an extra 2 kilos (4.4lbs) after the loading phase and i didn't go up in body fat I'm certain.

I'm glad you question the results dude. It makes the forums better when people are wanting substantial answers to things. I will make a promise to everyone that if I ever hit 30' running vertical then I'll post up the video. Thanks for the support.

See you next post,

Mig

Hey just a quick update I forgot to mention earlier. I'm now half way through week 2 of phase one. I measured my vertical this morning after doing a workout but didn't see any extra gains. It's still 24' for standing. Cheers,

Mig

I've also been using creatine but i actually have been using it for a long time back when I was just working out my upper body for muscle. Anyway my vert hasnt been improving as fast as yours but that might be because my starting vj was 6 inches higher. Anyway I have been kind of lazy and I usually only take creatine on days i go to the gym which is 3-4 days a week(I started going less cuse my upper body is about as big as i want it now). So The question I wanted to ask is are you taking it every day?

During the loading phase of creatine I was taking it every day. An article I read states that the loading phase needs 10-20grams per day for 7 - 10 days. After that you are in the maintentance phase and only have 5grams per day. These days I often miss a day or two but still notice benefits in training. Just one serve of creatine after a workout seems to be fine for me now that I've gone through the loading phase.

Hope that helps,

Mig

Everyone on bodybuilding.com and most studies say you dont need to do the loading phase because your body can only take in 5 grams a day and the rest would just be peed out. Most articles say it is BS but almost all the creatine companies will tell you to do the load cuse they want you to use the product faster and buy another. But for sure I should be taking 5 grams a day I'll try to be more religous with it. Maybe my legs will start to recover faster if i take it everyday now. thanks
