Default Help with Dunking

Hey guys, I'm a pretty avid basketball player (played in high school and college, still play in a few leagues now at 25). One thing that has always bothered me is that I can't dunk, I can get really close, but just can't get over the hump. I'm 6'3 185 and in very good physical condition. I can touch the rim with no problem, but can't get up to put the ball through.

Everyone I talk to says it's my form that's holding me back and I'm starting to agree. I just can't seem to run and jump in one continuous motion, I always run towards the basket, stop, and then jump. I would really appreciate any suggestions you guys have that could help.

doing a running dunk in a continuous motion is just like a lay up except dunking it if your dunking with right hand bring up right leg and dunk it

ha ha this is on yahoo answers also. do you use a 2 foot jump or a one-two curl (kinda like in basketball when you plant one foot then curl the other.) what i do is run then quickly curl and just practice converting you running energy into a straight up jump.

Just trying to use all of my resources. I've been using a two-step jump because for some reason I 've been having trouble with the curl. I think it's in the form.

Okay

I'm more of a 1-legged jumper but i can jump fairly off two (about 30'') and here's a few things that has helped me before.

-Try to go down in your jumpstop with momentum, this is crucial and i hope you get what i'm talking about. (i.e. swing of the arms down)

-Then go up with the ball fully in one hand and the other barely holding it, you'll get better extension. and thus an inch or two to get you over the hump.

-I know it's probably obvious but try to practice for 5 mins per day just concentrating on approaching as fast as possible and making the jumpstop quick and low. It feels unnatural at the beginning but within a few days i'll be 2nd nature and you'll have better hops(promise).

Combine that with the other tips and i think you'll do it, the latest is probably what you should focus on since you're body probably already have the needs to dunk. Work on technique to get you the inches that are missing.

This is what I do:

1. WARM UP AND STRETCH!!!!!
2. If you're 1 legged like me, dont step too far from your center of gravity(too far out from where you jump)
3. If your right handed, bring your left knee up as high as possible and vice versa, stretch your free arm downwards and focus on the rim
4. Practice with a smaller ball (size 6) then work your way up to a full size ball (size 7)

I practice like this and I can say i have made some progress over the past few months. Hope this helps

Wow, 6'3, keep working hard at your vert because Nate Robinson at really 5'7 won the Dunk Contest.
