Default alternative to deadlifts?

im about 6'4" or 5" with long legs, so today when i was at the gym and i was doing deadlifts, a trainer came up to me and told me that i should look up alternative exercises to the deadlift because in the long run i could hurt myself. Although deadlifts are really important he has a really good point, lower back pain runs in the family and deadlifting involves big weights so this is alot of weight which could hurt me. the only thing i could think of would be finding a way to raise the bar so that i dont have to bend over so far, or just drop the exercise(which would be bad). please give me some suggestions.

whats your squat and bodyweight outa curiousity? you could work on getting a nice squat up ive found that helped my total body strength in such great ways, and in the weight room deads feel more secure on my back

look up deadlift variations and see what you think of them all

Complete bullshit. Work with weights within 80% of your projected max for low to moderate reps and perfect technique. You will only be at risk if you are weak, too ambitious, too fatigued and/or have poor technique. Post a vid of yourself and I can tell you if you'll develop back problems.

well i weigh about 195, i squat 315, and i deadlift 250. i would show you a video if i owned a camera. i would say that i have pretty good form, im not an expert (im only 16), but i used to work out with a trainer who was a bitch about form. but today i saw someone doing deadlifts with one of those (idk the name of them) metal things that you step into and most people do with shrugs. it looked like there's less stress on the back so i will try it and tell you guys

Either you aren't doing full squats, or your deadlifting with bad form. There is no way your deadlift should be less than your squat at that weight unless you wear all that powerlifting gear.

Get one. Don't tell me you can't afford one. People on welfare benefits here in the UK have digital cameras. Post a vid then we can help ciritque your form. Better yet, film it and post on The Vertical Summit :: Index - plenty people there will be able to help (assuming you post a good clip).

No. Your numbers indicate form issues. I can DL your weight and I just started re-training (and my squat is way down from where it last was).

Trap bar DL. Not a bad substitute, but it feels different. I personally like the normal DL because it is easier for me to maintain grip (i.e. do heavier weights).

i dont know how tall you guys are or anything, but i think the reason i cant deadlift as much as my squat is because i have to bend pretty far down. i really was just looking for an answer for alternative exercises but i started a debate about form and why i dont own a camera. thanks for all the comments because it helps alot and i will have a trainer take a look at my form.
