you rest the bar on your traps, not on your shoulders lol that would hurt like hell. pinch you back together and rest on the top muscles. also deadlifts will strengthen your lower back more than anything
and squats are prolly the best thing to do for vertical. i'm 5'10, 160 lbs, haven't done plyos in 4 years, started squatting around 6 months ago and i have a standing 24 inch vert thanks to squats.
