No,obviously not for one legged jumpers, and contradictory to popular belief, neither is it for bi-lateral jumpers.

Being lower to the ground would mean more knee bend, and more time taken to get into and out of the jumpstop phase. The goal is to spend as little time as possible in the jumpstop phase as possible.

Watch good one legged jumpers like Kadour Ziani, do they go low to the ground when jumping? no.

Question Re: Jumping Technique

Is it possible for me to gain immediate 6" my vert jump from a running start? Let say if I have standing vert jump of 32" and then I run to attempt a dunk, is it going to be 38"? Because a lot of users here have higher running vert jump from their standstill jump and the thing that made me wondering is some of you guys has 20" but when it comes to run it increases 8", is this real?

It really depends on your plyometric ability, some people can get higher of a jumpstop because they are two legged jumpers with a better strength base, while others can get higher of one leg from a run up because they have stronger plyometric ability.

Whether you are going of one leg or two, you should most probably get at least a few extra inches by running which gets more speed and therefore more to be converted into the vertical jump.

You should just go out there and try it for yourself, as suggested in my first post.

Thumbs up Re: Jumping Technique

sorry for the double post

people i'd just like to mention that this information is rather old, not saying that it won't help in any way, but if you have any new advice to offer about the jumping technique that is recent, please feel free to post because things change over time and new information is gained constantly, so be aware of that.

if you have any ideas, seen or heard anything relevant to jump technique speak up.

Im 5'7 and can grab the rim with to hands but can't dunk it. i think my height might have somthing to do with it but I know I have a problem with my technique. I jump of two feet. and i am good with the drop step part but i cant find a good way to swing my arms with the ball in my hand. when i don't have the ball in my hands and swing my arms to jump i go much higher. Can you please tell me a good technique to swing your arms with the ball in your hands.

Mostly, this is a co-ordination thing, and once your ball control gets better, the problem will cease to exist.

Work on increasing your grip strength, this may be the real problem behind you not being able to get up higher with the ball, because the ball weighs very little in reality, and should not hinder how high you get.

Practice dunking technique using smaller sized balls such as tennis balls, netballs, volleyballs and so on. Once you master the technique with easier balls, then move onto larger sized ones. You can do this on lowered rims and gradually increase the height, it helps you to slowly get better at it.

Try not to forcefully swing your arms when you attempt dunks, go up with an emphasis on controlling the ball.

Nice thread, though when i jump i do a left right plant and jump, with no jumpstop is this better\worse. Also i dont get much higher with a run up than stand still jump. I also get the same just doing 1 step left right plant as a runnin jump, if that makes sense. Anything that could help me, my vert is low , only about 23-26inches nt sure but i've never trained before and hopefully im going to start VJB novice weights or if i decide to buy Athletic advantage, im really stuck there too lol. I dont think im going to do much plyos as i play ball everyday/ shoot around at home.

I havn't read the whole topic so i don't know if this has been mentioned but:
-when you jump (1 legged) point your arms and fingers down, or the free arm and fingers if dunking, this helps

I was watching a video on youtube and this is what it said, for more info just search for a guy by the name "stretchexpert" on youtube.

Another thing is,,,, this is not so important but, I am right handed but used to jump off my right leg (using my left hand to grab rim), but i couldnt palm the ball so i used my right hand, meaning i had to jump off my left leg. I couldnt do this at all.

But i kept practicing and now i can jump alot higher off my left leg than my right.

The point is KEEP PRACTICING AND YOU WILL MAKE PROGRESS!!!!!
