i dont like situps. ur abs are only used in the first 30 degree motion of situps which is basicly a crunch. for the rest u are using ur back, and as lazurus sed probably ur p-chain and hip flexors n stuff. but i have heard u can hurt your back from them and my back feels sore after doing theeom sometimes too. i prefer crunches. the burn is much better but make sure u do them slowly. russian twists ( dont try and do too many ) leg raises are good, pikes. that kind of thing. check out this abs workout i do, it works really good

guys situps are not good for getting a six pack they are good for working the hip flexors like lazarus mentioned which helps with vertical jump. doing hundreds of situps will lead to back pain but if you do a normal amount of them you should be fine.

i thought like the worst thing to do when working your abs to do only situps.

there are at least 3 parts of abs that you must (i think)
the obliques, upper abs, and lower abs.(along with the lower back as well)
so i think if you want abs to show off or something then don't only do sit-ups because it can cause muscle imbalance.

In football we had to do straight legged situps with straight legged Russian twists (a partner would hold your legs). I'm not sure what significance this change would have on the vertical, but it definitely helped my abs get stronger and more defined.
