Hi Redsoxfan
Don't you lose your vertical when you stop training regardless. I mean this is hardly a unique problem with weight vests or weight belts. If you stop lifting weights or doing plyos you will lose your vert. I believe the reason I never lost my gains was because I continued to train, albeit with other means. To be honest I would happily get the weight vest back and train with it again.
From my own experiences all the bad things said about weight vests never happened so I concluded that this was just scare tactics put out by manufacturers of alternative products. Actually on that point, I read a review of weight vests at the vertical jump homepage and they made what i thought was an interesting comment - would all those pro teams with all the millions of dollars invested intheir athletes use weight vests if they were a) dangerous and b) didn't work? I doubt it. Actually onthe X-vest web site they have some endorsements from some pretty good coaches including Mike Boyle (Jump experts, T-Nation), and Charles Staley (T-Nation and many others). These are hardly random's in the world of sports and athletic improvement.
Just a few thoughts
