This is not a simple question Main Event. You don't need any special equipment to do plyos, just something you can jump off such as a box, a ledge, a chair etc. If you are following VJB and have never done too much training start with whatever is the easier (I can't remember if it is beginner or novice). The programs in VJB are excellent and well set out. They take you through a nice progression. As for speed or explosiveness I am not sure what you mean. All plyos are supposed to be done as fast AND as explosively as possible. I don't think you can seperate those two traits.

As for how long it takes, well everyone is different. Untrained athletes will make greater immediate gains then trained athletes. Stronger athletes will generally derive more benefit from plyos than weaker athletes etc. For more background information about plyos there is plenty of info on the net or you can try this:

Good luck in your training. Following VJB is a great start.

the vjb beginner took like 20+ minutes, it's pretty exhausting.
