The coach is not saying that cross country will help your jump, he is saying that conditioning like that is a good thing that will help you in basketball games. Those long distance runners do long distance running. I'm pretty sure that they don't care about vertical jump, because that isn't what they do.

Means nothing? He said he wants to focus on explosiveness and strength and he wants to dunk, how does a long runner's VJ mean nothing in this case. It will make him slower, it will sabotage his vertical leap. You're right, long distance runners don't care about VJ, but this kid DOES care about his jump. Long distance conditioning definately will not help in basketball games, stick with the sprints.

Re: is my coach right?
u should buy one of those lung things that make u breathe better. cross country is aerobic so basicly if u can keep taking in lots of air when ur tired u should be able to keep going for longer.

[quote=24forlife]he wants me to run cross country and i wanna focus on explosiveness, strength, dunking...QUOTE]
Cross Country, will increase ur stamina, the amount of time u can spend playin it out hard on court, but wont do nething good for your speed or dunking. As most cross country is done as a jog, you wont get that explosiveness ur afta. I think the VJB Says it best why not to do that kind of marathon type running training. Kelly reckoned his vert dropped from 36 to 15 inches or something rediculous like that, plus ud probably die in heat like that So i dont think it will do anything watsoever for wat you want to focus on.

Re: is my coach right?
cross country does increase your stamina ,casue some ppl get tired quick in basketball while the others are playing fast geting the rim in 10 secs or less
