yes running stairs workspretty much the same leg muscles as squats , if you sprint stairs it can help increase speed and vertical jump. but if you do a cardio work on stairs it will help burn more fat then running. i used to do it for like a year it really helps tone legs and increased my speed by like .3 seconds that year but i never was that fast i have a 5 40yard dash

the you could run up and down them. and do plyo jumps like jump up three steps or 4 or sprint up the small steps. its hard to do if you have limited room.

i cant do it at the gym i work at because they dont let you run the stairs so i cant run either anymore.

running up stairs is great for your calf muscles you will really feel the pull on them as you go and then later on your quadriceps (thighs) will feel it as well it does greatly benefit your sprinting and endurance as well that is why it is so popular with boxers. another good one is to dribble a ball up the stairs bouncing it on every stair as you go as fast as you can greatly improves your ball handling but it isn't easy to do at a reasonable speed.
