Yes running stairs works many of the leg muscles used when doing single leg squats. Sprinting up and down stairs can also help condition you for your sport and increase your vertical jump and speed to an extent. The use of cardio while running up and down stairs could also help burn more calories than regular jogging. I used to do some stair running in high school and it can help.
