Always try and create space by taking a step back and if the mans bigger then you and you cant out jump him don't try to shoot over him, pump fake to get him in air then take the shot or draw a foul.

It's obvious that you should practice your shooting. But there is a difference between shooting when you have all day and no distractions and when there is a man in your face. Often times the defender doesn't even touch the ball but he
1)Forces you to shoot with a different motion
2)Distracts you

You should make sure that you have a good form. Many people shoot with bad form when it's just them and the hoop. But when there is a defender the hands get to low and away and it's an easy block. Ask yourself could I shoot with a man in my face with this motion?

You should also practice with distractions. At first you can just practice with anything that distracts you. Then you should move up to actual practicing with a defender. But he doesn't need to defend all out at first.

1) use the triple threat position
2) get a high release point
3) get a quick release
4) put some arc on that shot. check out Ben Gordan

after shooting perfectly when wide open u can try to put an obstacle between u and the rim that simulates the defender.

if your defender's hand isn't in your shot pocket (area below chest and above waist), then pull the trigger. if his hand isn't in your shot pocket, you have enough room to shoot so theres no way he can block your shot.

1. Pump Fake to bring him in the air, you can only draw the foul if he is jumping towards, if he goes straight up and you go into him, it's either an offensive foul on you or you missed the shot horrible. Also, once he is in the air, go around him and shot or keep going to the basket.

2. Fake pass and drive past him.

3. Shoot and hope he doesn't block it.

All I have to say, to shoot with a defender on you, you need MUSCLE MEMORY, practice the shot that you want to take, at game speed, build muscle memory and even if you can't see the basket your muscle memory will make your shot go in and you can easily shoot over your defender.
