wow....is this right?
well
u know how everyone says its bad to wear ankle weights when playing basketball or jumping cause it messes up your knees and stuff
well i always beleieved this
and i probably still do
but today i went to the basketball court and there was this kid there who can JUMP... i mean he was dunking like nothing, 360's, between the legs
he made it look EASYYYY..... and he was only 5-11
i asked him how the heck he jumps so high
and he said ankle weights
he doesnt actually fo a program or anything.... O.O
they just strap around his bottom foot and ankle so they dont move
he showed me them, he had three differnt weights, 5 and 10 lb
he said all he does is play with the 5 or10 lb waits, and just the fact hes jumping with the little extra weight when shooting or fgoing for layups it helps him jump higher
he also said that hes been using them for 2 years
and started out with 2 lb ones and when i asked if his knees hurt or anything he said no...
do u think his jumping had anything to do with the weights, or hes just a naturally high jumper
and do u think his knees are gonna hurt in the future

Re: wow....is this right?
I think cause he started off with the 2llbs first, he's legs kinda got used to the ankle weights....I use ankle weights sometimes and they don't hurt my knees...
But he's knee's will probz hurt in the future if he keeps on using them as much as he does...
how often does he use them??

Re: wow....is this right?
Just like anything, it may not hurt everyone, but the majority of people are going to experience tendon and ligament injuries if they run and jump in ankle weights. They are made for aerobics, not running and jumping. This kid's genetics may help him not get injured, but who knows, he may have problems in the future. If you want to add hypergravity training to your workouts, get a weighted belt. I think JumpUSA sells a good one.

Well, that's true. I've seen some people who actually made serious gains in their vertical leap using ankle weights. One of them was actually a high school superstar here in my country and he could and surely would have made the pros here only if his knees didn't get messed up.
Believe me, it will haunt you in the end. I definitely wouldn't advise it. I actually have some ankle weights here, and it's been collecting dust for years.
At that time however, we were in grade school (a long, long time back) and the only vertical jump program available was Air Alert II, which will also make your knees hurt and increase the likelihood of injury.
Don't settle for the short cut. Try VJB or TVP, at least you'll get the gains in a safer manner.

Re: wow....is this right?
go with a weighted belt, your waist can hold it much better than anything else. Ankles, even weighted vests aren't good. Ankle weights should only be used (imo) for slow weight training, not during plyos or anything like that. Even the vests put too much weight on your upper spine when you're doing really intensive athletics.
