Re: my worst enemy
well i don't think it is self confidence that is making you play bad, the same goes for you a.j.ing.
it think it is fear. you seem confident in your game and you know it is good. however you seem to fear throwing your best game at someone and them walking all over it.
you both sound confident that you know you are good players, so just go and do it. if someone blitzes you then so be it. that is the time to step back and say, "yeh they were better than me". and that is when you go and do your practice and your training and continue to come back until they have to fear you.

Re: my worst enemy

Re: my worst enemy
I had the same problem, In organized ball I clam up but in streetball I am unstoppable, even against the same teams I played against in an organized game. Hops will help your game but probably wont help your problem unless your a big dude. Just because you can jump doesnt mean you will finish. It takes time to develop creativeness with your hops.
First you should just try doing what you do no matter what. If you get blocked ripped whatever, just keep doing your thing do let it stop you. Eventually you will get passed the mental barrier of being embarrassed or shown up and be able to relax cause the worse has happened repeatedly. I did this one game and got my shot sent 3 times in a row (twice off the backboard). But each time it got easier. By the 4th time i had the ball i didn't care what happened just like in pick up game, and ended up scoring 20 that half.
If that does'nt work develop a mean mid-range jumper. Im talking a quick catch and shoot and a quick off the dribble jumper. The goal is to be able to shoot with out thinking because you dont have to be in your comfort zone for that. Once you hit a few shots your confidence will go up and you will find yourself more comfortable to do what you normally do.

Re: my worst enemy
heres my 2 cents on the matter. I think that when you play street ball and not organized games everythings easier for you because theres no pressure and its just you playing. If you miss a jumpshot or get blocked you just shrug it off because your just playing for fun. where as if your playing organized ball If you get your shot blocked, miss a layup, miss a wide open jumper it counts for points. Your teammates might lose faith in you and not pass to you anymore, your coach might bench you and/or yell at you and you begin to doubt yourself. In a streetball game you just play your game and dont worry about making mistakes. you need to do the same in a game. and if you think that your way better than everybody and your worried about embarrasing somebody with your game just dont. play your best no matter who your playing whether its a blow out or a tight game.

Re: my worst enemy
i always thought its pure handles
as soon as your handles are sick, and you know they are from countless hours of just you and the ball, they get transferred to organised ball, where you feel that when you drop the ball its part of you
from there the whole match feels more in your favor, and slowly you stop feeling self-conscious and develop that feeling of 'flow'
basically everyone feels nervous in any sport until they make their skills autonomous, some it comes naturally some it doesn't

Re: my worst enemy
Many of us get our confidence from doing weight-training, pylometrics and training. Not just months, but years and years of training. We KNOW we can do it, we KNOW we are the strongest out on the court, we CAN do it. Sometimes you got to have something to show you that you can do it, and in my first month of weightlifting I increased my squat from around 150lbs to almost 200lbs, and that just gave me more and more confidence, knowing that I one day will be the best.

Re: my worst enemy
I remember being like this when I was rly young and played lots of soccer
suddenly I lost it and was like one of the best
I hope same happens with basketball
and yes I do hate it when people yell and shit after I miss, you are not my fuken coach, even a coach shouldn't be doing that
my definition or of a real player is:
a guy whos always ready to pass and focuses on giving you a chance to score while throwing a few in himself from time to time ofcourse
and doesnt take it to seriously
that might not be good for an nba team I guess but this is how I see it
I try to be like that, I dont see to many people like that
all I see is people being selfish and thinking they are the best but they dont realise that a good sports person needs more then just physical skills

Re: my worst enemy
well i have started to lose the self conscious thing in bball. i have just thought, i wanna play with these guys, in their rep teams, so if i cant even play properly with them at school then how am i gona get better or get picked for a team. so at tryouts for the school team i just played my best, especially on defense. it was a year 9 and 10 tryout. ( im year 9) and i blocked to year 10 kids, one out of court and im a point guard. i have lost the consciousness thing i think coz i just cbf with it anymore...

Re: my worst enemy
sorry for opening yet another old post... i just wana say to the origional poster that everybody.. and i mean everybody will experience self doubt in their lives. even those who dont play sport, i think the way to get over it is to play how you usually play dont try any harder, and if you are a good player it will shine through in time, and if you carry yourself well people will respect you more which helps a load wen you doubt yourself
