Default Basketball Reffing

hey, so i just started doing a course to become a ref. I'm doing it at knox basketball association in victoria. for the last 3 years it has won the award for the best ref training in australia. ill be getting $8.60 a game when i first start reffing. i can ref up to 7 games a saturday, and ref 7 days a week. the price goes up when i become a higher level ref. who here refs? how much do u make? how many games do ref a week? any tips for me on reffing? thanks

here's a tip. the best ref is one who isn't noticed. so dont favor any teams because that is just plain annoying. also if one player charges into another player while going up for a layup; dont make a no-call because its obviously a foul on someone.

Just be consistent. I am a terrible referee, but i am consistently terrible.
If you call a charge or three in the key down one end you have to call it down the other.

The other thing is, when you come across a guy with a huge ego, like myself, make sure you let them know who's boss. They'll try and run you ragged if you dont. Same goes for coaches, if they mouth off to you let them know who's calling the shots. I know a ref whos stare managed to shut me up. And believe me that is something.

Other than that not much to say, because like i said i can't ref for shit, but good luck with it

haha, well im not afraid to tell people whos boss. none of my friends wanted to do the course becoz they said refs cop so much shit, but i sed, and thats what a tec foul is for... but yeh, my dad says all the time that if a ref makes a really bad call down one end, then they should call one the other way. just so its not one sided.

Nice to see you reffing AJING, I considered reffing before although I chose not to because of the amount of crap refs get sometimes. Anyways let us know if you're reffing any tournaments this year. You might be reffing one of my games.

don't favor tall people cause that happens so much its not funny cause refs think that shorter players give more crap out and also don't be afraid to send of players for rough conduct maybe cause its never happened once and its not cool wen someone cant walk but the other guy who took a cheap shot keeps on playing.

Notice every small detail on the court. Notice players without the ball. They may be fouling each other. Also, look out for shooting and reaching fouls. These are the two fouls that most referee don't call but they call a team a lot.
