Default Want to get back into basketball. Help me out.

I havent played any form of basketball in years. It wasnt because i lost the desire to play it was more that personal/family stuff got in the way. Now im 18 and on my own and i want to get back into the sport and maybe try out for a college team when i transfer.

One of the things i wanted to know is which jump program should i get? I measured my stats yesterday and i am 6-0, 175 pounds, my max squat is 315,
my max dead lift is 405. My standing vert was 29 inches.

How long did you drop off basketball for?

I would say get to know how to get your own personal workout routine at the gym and start off there. If you were a great athlete, you probably still have 75% of what you could do. You have plenty of time though. Get your speed back, your reaction times and get back into shape. Remember aside from weight lifting, cardio (running machine, elliptical etc), sprints and jumping excerises will help you tons.

I'm assuming you know the basics of basketball? Where you ever on the school team etc? Start from what you do the best, like basic dribbling. Get two balls, do a bunch of dribbling excersises, layups, close shots. I always see people forget the fundamentals, and they are already shooting 3 pt-ers that go in 1/10 shots. The more you work on your fundamentals, the better your overall game is.

Once you start getting the hang of it, go out, play a pick-up game and get schooled. I learned from simply playing people much better than me. Learn how they position themselves when playing defence, how they are blowing past you to get to the hoop etc.

Watch a lot of college hoops (March Madness FTW ) and know how the pace of the game is and what to expect in College.
In High School, I bet you could watch some of the Senior Team practices and learn some of the plays they are doing.

I hope this will help you get back into basketball.
Josh.

well just listen to what he said. im assuming that your going to play PG. the most important thing playing that position is having a good basketball IQ and being a good passer. the only way youll get that is playing pickup and focusing on what you need to improve for your specific position.

Yeah, playing lots of pickup games will get you into it.

I'd also say, if you can afford it, to hire a personal trainer/coach. If you're trying to make the leap, a lot of these personal trainers/coaches used to play in the ncaa/nba and run you through the same drills they did when they were playing.

Your squat and dead lift numbers are good so you probably won't need to worry about getting into shape.
Your really need to drill your fundamentals though. If you haven't played for a while you will notice your ability and feel for things in the game may have taken a bit of a bruising but it's nothing you can't change with some good solid fundamentals work. You should go down to a local club or something try and get involved there and get some more experience. That i guarantee will be your main problem.

I say the most important thing would be to get your defense if I stopped playing ball for a long time and I wanted to get back into it, I would run run and run in order to get my wind and my speed back then I would work on my offense by shooting 80 freethrows and 80 jumpshots a day
