Why does this happen?
Found a place nearby where they play pickup games all day.. I myself and 5 foot 10 and on a run can touch rim sometimes, but most of the time I get right under it. well today me and my friend were the only two white guys there, and it seemed like noone wanted us.we had to call next game to even play, and then noone wanted to run. I used to play highschool basketball in Indiana, but I wasnt able to really show any of my skills because the guys that finally played with us didnt give us white boys the ball...
we asked one guy to run and he laughed and said no, I want t o win, whats up with this stereotyping? I mean are all places like this?
I know alot of them are buddies and such, but it doesnt make sense. one guy said we probably dont have any skills since we werent a brother, I about said something to him.
what do you think would be best to do? I know some of them are better than me, but I also know a couple that got picked up in games that I could hold my own against andmaybe even beat one on one.
What woul you do in my shoes?
Thanks
I am doing the verticle jump bible starting monday btw so maybe when I dunk they will pick me haha

Re: Why does this happen?
the fact that you dont know what to do and are asking for advice on this subject tells me you arnt good at basketball and theres a reason they did pick you.
Obviously when you start playing on a new court, you have to rebuild your reputation. Your not gonna go out there and get the ball every possesion. Do other things that will help your team then someone will pick you up. Simple as that.
But in reality, if you are any good you would have the confidence to demand the ball and do something good with it

Re: Why does this happen?
see, you are making assumptions... I know I have to rebuild my rep, and show them I can ball.....
Demand the ball? Its kinda hard to do that when they look over at you, and then they drive into the hole and miss. Kinda bad when you get the ball and pop up two nice shots, one being a 20 foot fade on a guy 4-5 inches taller than you, and getting a rebound on the same guy, and spinning around him to lay it up off the board... Yeah thats the only two points I got.
I did numerous things, setting picks, running screens, and even did one nice no look pass(the first time I had the ball), and still it seemed the same.
I alreayd know what you told me to do... I called ball a few times, to get a no, or a snicker, then didnt get it. so I guess I will have to find some other ways.... how do you demand the ball then?

if it's a new court, it doesn't matter how good you play.. Just keep playing like you play normally.
The thing is being regular.. The more regular you are in the new court the more accepted you're going to be.

Re: Why does this happen?
Thats funny, I always thought, if you called next and it was your turn, you picked up your team and ran?

This is so true. If you have some friends to make up a team of your own you can challenge (people with be watching you though so just don't choke with the pressure though).
Are you a guard? It is pretty hard to gain respect as a guard in a typical pickup game I feel. There will be contact and you will be forced to put up difficult shots. Lots of other people have great handles so it is hard to stick out that way. Much easier if you also play a bit like a small forward, play great defence and are a decent rebounder with good vert. Yes, very good vert is respected esp if others don't expect it.
