Default very effective defense without trying to suffocate opponent!

y do so many people think that if you play so close to your man and basically try and get so close it kinda seems the players suffocating you, this doesnt = better defense.

i see so many players try and get way to close and they only really end up fouling to stop the player, i think the best way to play defense and i've locked alot of people down this way is:

1. always stay on the balls of your feet and get low so the player cant out move you (be ready)

2. play about an arms length off you man unless looking for steals this way you have enough space but still put pressure on your opponent.

3. if the player hits shots over you then it is necessary to start getting a little higher with the lowered defensive position and put a hand in the face of the shooter (still do not get to close otherwise the drive is very easy for your opponent, with every shot even the first get a hand in the way dont make life easy for your opponent ).

4. when the player drives dont be afraid to use the arm bar a little and get your body in the way, do not extend this to much because if used incorrectly it can lead to foul trouble.

5. you have to out think your opponent so they cant first step you if they do they will score or you will foul to stop them, having a better team defense will relieve pressure so its not the biggest mistake.

6. be mindful of what lane your opponent likes to take do they like the right hand or left hand, if they can only dribble one handed lock that side down. if two handed dribbler dont over extend to either side. (as a two handed dribbler i know how easy it is to manipulate someone if they underestimate your two hand dribbling).

7. always treat your opponent as if they are the best player in the world and you have to play at your peak. (mental ability is as equal as physical ability).

this is how i play defense on someone with the ball yet many of the steps apply to off the ball play. i can still better myself on many things of my defense as i believe everyone can always improve these are just a few things i have tried to refine for myself in my defensive play. i hope this helps some people in even the smallest way.

Yeah one thing I always remember is "Defense wants space and offense wants contact". Use one hand to mirror the basketball and the other to slap the ball from under the ball because if you slap it from the top you'll get called for the foul. So that way you don't get a foul and can possibly steal the ball or cause a turnover.

yeh when there in triple threat u mirror the ball with ur lead hand, well that what i do or u can put ur hand in front of their eyes so they are forced to dribble so they can see again, make a risky pass or take a shot that they cant see.

I used to do that, (suffocating the O) But now in my school im a respected D they are scared i can take the ball off any body especially on fast break steals. From a pro D - i believe if u know where their goin then look at their move for e.g. when on mano-a-mano ur always square with them and try to attack slap the ball as soon as they do a particular dribble, if they are a show off usually they would do between the legs dribble to the other hand and back wait for the ball to touch the other hand and swipe away. e.g.

When and How to attack the ball

1.Cross from right to left under legs - U SWIPE THE LEFT HAND and VICE-VERSA !!!
2.Attack from the back so they dont notice - If the O is getting double teamed then try to go behind them for they can only go backwards and get them un expectedly.
3. If they give u a chance get it for example if he does behind the back dribble in front of ur face get it for he cant see u and will just show off

im not athletic so i try to look at it logically about the psychological mind. I think like this "Some stupid people can run fast but some dont know when to stop" Get it ? there to stupid to stop running?
oh anyway yeah thats one tactic and remember for those guys who look at defence as if its nothing defence can be very embarassing aswell for the opposite player who has lots of handle rep in ur school and also if people around you think that its a waste of time think of it like this you took the ball off them which means uve done your job to help the team get possession

I rekon that someone should sticky this defence thread some where maybe the moves section? cause its the opposite face of tricks and offence a whole different street D anyway this is a good thread someon sticky it
