Default 'Twenty-One' Streetball Variant Without Free Throws Possible?

Hello,

I stumbled upon a variant of Streetball known as 'Twenty-One' recently. It involves 3 or more players, each with his own score battling to be the first to score 21 points.

That seems pretty exciting to me, but there's one rule of 21 that I don't understand. After scoring one basket, you're required to attempt some free throws, then the ball goes 'live after you miss'.

I'd like to know why that rule exists and whether it's possible to have an enjoyable game without that rule: just dribbling and scoring and clearing.?

Thanks!

i think thats king of the court. its every man for themselves. i guess u can change it so it would be the first one to score 21 would win but usually i play this way; if u score ur in the next round, if ur the last one standing ur out.

In florida its pretty common to see people playing 21 when you go to the court usually waiting for more people to show up or to warm-up.

it goes like this:
first one to reach 21 wins every time you score you either go to the free-throw line or the 3pt line each shot you make there counts as 1 until you miss.

you can also play with tips thats when the ball bounces off the rim you grab it in mid air and put it back in either with two hands or one.

Two hands= you going back down to 0 automatically
one hand= You being out.. of the game but someone can throw you back in once they score..

o and when you reach 20 and your shooting the free throw if you miss you go back down to 15.

When we play we shoot fromm 3pt line and if you do a trick and score its an extra 3(no lay up)

Thanks, but is it possible to have an enjoyable game without this rule? A game in which you all try to score as many times as possible but there are no free throws after anyone scores? Just constant dribbling and scoring?

that might be fine, but then the guy who scores has no advantage. if you like the way that sounds, go for it, if it's fun, keep doing it!

Thanks, but isn't the point the scorer for scoring gets an advantage in itself?

you must not be from the states. well you can play 21 however you chose if you want to you can even take the free through part out so it would be more fast passed and free flowing. actually that sounds like alot of fun im gunna try that next time I play 21. ALSO you dont need 3 people you just need 2
