Whenever I'm playing in a pick-up game I have trouble stopping my opponents when they run right at me and go for the lay-up.
All I do to stop them is extend my arms as far as I can and try to run with them but they still always make it.
So what I wanna know is, how physical can you be? How much contact can you make on defense?
Also, I rented NBA 2K7 and I get called a lot for "reaching-in". Can somebody tell me what reaching-in is? I wanna know so I don't do it in an actual real life game.

reaching in..is going for a steal and getting the other guy's hand instead of the ball...

as for defense here's sumthin my coach told me, cuz i used to get crossed alot... i used to always look at the ball and follow it on d...which doesnt work at all,the trick is to watch his chest, cuz if u focus on his hands or the ball it just wont work...but i got a tighter d wen i just concentrate on his chest....that just works for me....

well im just a pure a blocker but i don know how to explain it. When im in a game and they drive on me i keep my hands up and make them really REALLY stiff , it helps me contest the shot and i block it sometimes. I hope that helps

If people are driving on you go with them. Run with them to the basket jump with them and as soon as they have the ball in one hand swat it. Even if you don't get the ball you will put them off so a higher percentage should miss.

Reaching is also batting down on the ball instead of batting it up. (sounds crazy but its completely true)

I don't wanna sound like a bitch or nothing because I appreciate your tips on stopping the driving and cross-overs, and like I said before, I'm definately gonna try what you guys were saying BUT I didn't want to know how to stop all that. I think eventually after so many times I get that done on me I'll probably figure out how to stop it. I just wanted to know how much you could get away with on defense. Can I bump them? Can I push them with my body? I know you can't just straight-up shove them but what can you do physically?

dude the easiest thing i can say is go on nba.com and find the rules. or i could tell u. when ur opponent is shooting u cant poke thier eyes out or break their arm u can only TOUCH THE BALL. u can take a charge which is like a pick but this is on defense and if u fall he gets called for the foul.... but don fall on purpose... unless u bet 500 bucks
