Alright I suck at playin organized basketball. I'm 13 and I'm gon be a freshman. Out on the street I can ball with them all. I go up and play against all the ballaz at the college here in town and can play right with them and last year I beat like 3 of the starters at the high school in 1 on 1. But when it comes to organized ball I suck.

Like in our offense when you have to run certain plays and stuff I just don't fit in and I really ain't cool with the coaches and then I just screw up. Its like I can't play my game when its all organized. I mean out on the street you just ball for respect and to have fun. Organized basketball just makes me all frustrated and makes me look like I suck.

I mean out on the street in order to get the ball you have to pass and you have to rebound and you'll get the ball plenty, you don't have to worry bout ball hogs cuz out on the street they don't get the ball unless they rebound it. In organized ball the PG gots the ball about 50-75% of the time.

Then you have to worry about not playin to aggressive and fouling out or traveling. And if you screw up you just get taken out so you don't take too many chances.

What can I do to get better at organized ball? I just really don't fit in with it.

even when you have to follow an offensive pattern and follow a coaches offense? its a LOT different than the street when you get to the serius stuff. believe me.

organized ball is a lil different but all i can say is listen to what the coaches say and do what they want so you get more playing time and you'll probably get the ball more. also, hustle alot and play D. i kno ur prolly frustrated but instead of saying u hate organized ball, look at it like a challenge cus once u get this down, ur overall games gonna be better

wow lol i feel the same as you do. i am not good when it comes to organized ball. i just dont get all the strategies and stuff, really confuses me and i screw up too.

I love organized ball more than Street now. I used to hate it also, until I learned how to play it and got confident. I'm sorry, but if you really want to play organized ball, you HAVE GOT TO get out of Streetball Ball habits. No other way around it. It's just the Truth. The reason the PG has the ball alot is because it's his role. I guarntee you though, he's not the guy shooting the most. That'll be your SG, C.

Contrary to popular beleif, YOU CAN play Organized ball and get respect. Hell, last year, in only 9th grade, I made Varsity and the whole school knew me then. So you CAN get respect.

To be honest, if you're struggling this much, it's normal. I did too when I tried out in 8th Grade and I was cut FIRST CUT. You know how that feels? But then I realized, in order to become a better player, I needed to know botch STREET and ORGANIZED Ball.

Regardless whats said, when you can do both, you are respected so much more by BOTH sides than if you can play just one type of ball. I

t'll give you plenty of respect from both sides of ball players. So learning BOTH types is great. My goal is to go Pro. It used to be And1, but I can't make And1 and my mom not have to still work. And1 is great if thats what you're for, because Organized Ball isn't for everyone. But And1 for me is secondary now.

The reason you proably don't fit is because, by reading your post, OB(Organized Ball) is new. You're not used to being told where to go, what play to run, ect. Its just nerves. You'll get used to it if you really want to. I did. I felt the same way you do now 2 years ago, so its natural

BUT

You have to pick........If you wanna play OB for real, the Streetball HAS to go for a WHILE. Not the whole year. Just doing the season. OR you can keep playing Street and forget OB. It's up to you. Its just a plus if you can play both LOL. Imagine Streetballers thinking they'll be able to school you cause you're "Fundamental" then you bring out the moves. LOL They'll be shocked cause they only thought you could play OB

Same with OB players. They may think all you know is tricks, then you school their ass with Fundamentals, a killer cross, and a mad J. Get it? So both are great to learn but it comes down to where your heart is

its not easy for street players to make the transition to organized. here are a few tips:

-watch as much organized ball as you can, nba or whatever. college is the best. assumin ur a pg really observe the pg and how he sets the play, and what he does AFTER he passes the ball. observe when he shoots, when he drives, and in what kind of situations he passes (help defense coming over, and he'll probably pass it off, or wont drive in the first place).

-streetballers (like myself

) tend to love to drive and force too much. practice attacking "when it's there." learn to read the d by instinct

-get used to pressure d, and learn how to create space

-triple threat is ur friend. grab the ball in that tt stance with hands as firmly as possible, swing the ball ahrd around and use jab steps/pump fakes so u get the d really on his feet.

-on d, learn what kind of aggression level is good. dont be too aggressive and get fouls, but play hard defence and pressure the ball. help defense is key: learn to look at the ball, man and constantly rotate to the right position (this is much harder than it looks).

-box out

-most importantly, practice these intangibles wherever you're playing, whether its in the street or at practice. its not easy changing your style, but if u really focus on it you can be street and fundamental at the same time.

The last two posts above mine help alot, even to me. I'm known in this part of town as a streetballer, but I want that to change. I wanna try at work on the fundamental part of my game instead of streetball now, because I wanna be more use to my team than just being able to cross someone.

Sounsd a bit like you dont like structure. Maybe you just dont like the rules you have to play to i dunno....I play Basketball and streetball.....i dont really change much to my game except for my driblle cause in streetball you got the caries and travels but in an organised game your still gona cross someone and pull up for your jump shot or go to the hoop mean while your team is still gona go "ooooh" and people watching you playing streetball game are gona be the same......look at true players of the game like A.I...he still does his thing. You say u cant play agressivly.....sure theres a limit in organised ball but all the people i play against if my league know im gona come out and play agresive Defense and offense....I gain my respect through drilling home that 3 when my man gives me that inch or driving and not stoping for anyone when my mans wrong footed.....Streetball is what give people that passion to succeed in Organised basketball.
