Default Working on Upper Body While Working on Vert

I'm doing the Vertical Bible and of course there's basically nothing about upper body in it. There's just that small footnote that says you can work some upper body. I've read in other places that it will eat into your recovery time and thus be bad to do if you're focusing on just increasing your vert. Also there's the fact that upper body is only 5% of the vertical jump. I've heard that things like TVP have you work on upper body 3 times a week, so I don't really know what to make of it.
