Hi Novacaine,
I reckon creatine is responsible for a huge part of that. A study by SC University in Australia showed that creatine gave sprinters an 8% increase in strength after the loading phase of dosage. The rear kinetic chain muscles used by sprinters are very similar to that used in a vertical leap test so the benefits from creatine in that experiment translate over to some extent. I also think there are a few more things that need to be considered with those gains:
1. I had just starting to do squats with the proper technique for the week prior to that test. I "thought" I had been doing them properly for 6 months prior to that, until one day a friend said my squats look like shit. He corrected my technique and I had to drop down the weight so I could actually do them properly, but it ended up making my legs feel so much stronger after recovery.
2. Note that my overall vertical leaping ability only went up one inch!! So even though I got some good gains for a standing vertical, it still didn't help me at all to dunk the ball. I've got to do more plyometric work to translate that strength in to overall vertical gains.
3. I reckon my jumping technique could have just improved a little. Even though it was only a standing jump, I probably squatted down a little lower or something before launch and therefore got some sneaky improvements. The wall marks I made when doing the jump test show and honest 4 inch gain and were measured properly though.
To answer your question about creatine making me bigger or not, I would have to say it did. I gained an extra 2 kilos (4.4lbs) after the loading phase and i didn't go up in body fat I'm certain.
I'm glad you question the results dude. It makes the forums better when people are wanting substantial answers to things. I will make a promise to everyone that if I ever hit 30' running vertical then I'll post up the video. Thanks for the support.
See you next post,
