ok so before driving and you standing still, if ur open and near the key try and shoot the ball. If someone is guarding you then try and pass it to someone who is open. If no one is open, driving should be your last resort unless your really good at it. Before your dribble try and juke out the opponent by moving the ball around and putting it through your legs(not bouncing) and then after you could drive towards the basket.
