I use ankle weights for doing things like pullups, chinups, dips and some ab work. But I don't do any kind of running, plyometrics or jump training type stuff with them. The reason? Just try it for a couple minutes. I start to feel the strain in my knees very quickly.

When used like that they are not very good for you!
