The coach is not saying that cross country will help your jump, he is saying that conditioning like that is a good thing that will help you in basketball games. Those long distance runners do long distance running. I'm pretty sure that they don't care about vertical jump, because that isn't what they do.
Means nothing? He said he wants to focus on explosiveness and strength and he wants to dunk, how does a long runner's VJ mean nothing in this case. It will make him slower, it will sabotage his vertical leap. You're right, long distance runners don't care about VJ, but this kid DOES care about his jump. Long distance conditioning definately will not help in basketball games, stick with the sprints.
